About the Painting:

Lauren Bacall is iconic for so many reasons, but her husky voice, her plucky nature and her liquid sex appeal, made her an obvious choice to wear this hat. Pairing the masculine design qualities of the Stockman House with this handsome and sophisticated lady was a conscious decision.

The Stockman House, in Mason City, Iowa, is an example of Frank Lloyd Wright’s contribution to the Prairie School Style, and is about as American as it gets.

Lauren Bacall’s notoriety is inextricably linked to Humphrey Bogart, and the onscreen/off-screen pair was referred to simply as “Bogey and Bacall.”

Bogey was a trained theatre actor who tried several times to make it in Hollywood. He was not your conventional leading man but he found his niche as an everyman who inhabited the darker locales reserved for gangsters, P.I.’s and hustlers.

Bogart remained a force in Bacall’s life, even after his early demise. As a nod to their eternal love affair, I chose to have him silhouetted in the background - poised and quiet in the shadows, but always there.

The strip of film that borders the image is both a nod to Hollywood and to the other Frank Lloyd Wright buildings featured in the Frankly Speaking series.

Lauren Bacall’s first movie was opposite Humphrey Bogart. It is said that she was so nervous on set, that in order to stop from shaking, she pressed her jaw down toward her neck. The unmistakable tilt of her head, made this novice actress seem worldly and aloof- the perfect compliment to Bogey’s stock male character: thus Stockman and Bacall.
