About the Painting:

For what I thought was the final painting in this series I chose to paint Frank Lloyd Wright in his own hat. His face looks weathered, like the folds of sand in the desert he so loved, and worn like the furniture and the houses he designed. He has a jaunty and wise expression with his hat tilted forward and hand gently tilted backward enjoying one of life’s vices.

It was not an easy task tying all the images of the Frankly Speaking series together. I had just finished his face and described my intended background to someone who suggested that given the quality and creativity of the first six paintings, my proposed idea was lame. I was told that I could and should do a better summation of the series. So sufficiently ticked off and fuelled more by criticism than praise, my ideas suddenly began rolling out like a rock-star as my imagination tried to devise a better end to the series.

I poured over heaps of photos while I lay awake thinking about how to (prematurely) complete my series in a less “lame” fashion. It finally came to me, while I was asleep. In my dream I saw maps and lines - lots of lines. These turned out to be the blueprints of the six building profiled in my series. These blueprints, drawn in Frank’s own hand, looked worn and weathered like the face I had painted. The designs in my dream were all patched together by his wonderful line work- the kind he used on his stained glass windows.
