About the Painting:

This strong-minded individual fueled me to paint. Marlene Dietrich is unforgettable for so many reasons. From her bedroom eyes, to her much envied have-at-it androgynous style that was emulated by fashionistas for generations to come.

Dietrich was a woman confident in her own choices and convictions at a time when women’s views were so often suppressed. Her spirit made for an easy choice to include her and earned her a hat in my series.

Dietrich is modeling the Beth Shalom Synagogue (Elkins Park, Pennsylvania). This painting is a celebration of this woman’s solidarity with human rights. During WWII, the German government tried to entice Miss Dietrich to come back to act and perform Nazi propaganda for them but she refused.

She immigrated to the US, becoming an American citizen in 1939. She was awarded the Medallion of Honour of the State of Israel, along with the Medal of Freedom in 1945 from the United States.

This painting is set at night, illuminating both Dietrich and the synagogue in a halo of light. Beth Shalom is Hebrew for House of Peace - something Dietrich stood for her whole life. We see a smoking Marlene striking a confident and assertive pose ready to take on humanitarian issues with the Wright style.

About Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992)

Marlene Dietrich was born in Germany and received her American citizenship in 1937. She was a prolific actor and singer who continually changed her image to support her vision. In her youth, she starred in silent film, and later in classics such as The Shanghai Express, Morocco, Desire, and Witness for the Prosecution.

"A king, realizing his incompetence, can either delegate or abdicate his duties. A father can do neither. If only sons could see the paradox, they would understand the dilemma."
