About the Painting:
With Style and Grace is number three of the Frankly Speaking series. This house is called the David Wright House and it is located in Phoenix, Arizona. Frank Lloyd Wright designed this house for his son and daughter-in-law, and it was in the Wright family’s possession until 2010. It was sold and inexplicably slated to be demolished.
After much controversy, an anonymous buyer came forward and purchased the home from the developer who wished to demolish it. The owner is now working to restore the home and grounds, and after the restoration is complete, he/she will gift the property to the David and Gladys Wright House Foundation.
With this series of paintings, inspiration can come from either the house or the model wearing it. In this case, the idea for the hat came first and the hunt for the right model began. Another factor that shapes the finished piece is choosing a title. I will often have the name for the piece before I paint it. When this happens, the title stirs up new ideas and helps me finish the painting.
The name for this piece, With Style and Grace, helped me connect to both the model, Grace Kelly, and to the building. Grace Kelly, or Princess Grace, embodied a natural kind of nobility and the word grace easily conjures up an image of elegance, style and poise.
The backgrounds that I include in my paintings are just as important to me as the subject. My challenge with this series was to find a way to connect the model’s face to the background and trick the viewer into believing that this house could actually be worn as a hat. With this painting, I wanted a sparse, cloudless desert sky to bring a calm to the piece. The driveway leading up to the house reminds me of a pair of welcoming arms ready to offer a hug. It gives the house a sense of flow, much like the curious visitors who come and go.
The desert stands silent and wise, gracefully coexisting with its surroundings, an endless horizon, hinting at a timeless style and Grace.
