About the Painting:

Wright on Rita was born from social media - she is a product of the wonders of the Internet. I had posted pictures of my paintings on different social networking sites in an effort to get my images out there. They started to garner dozens of responses, but one notable response came from the executive director of Wright on the Park in Mason City, Iowa. Caitlin asked one simple question - “Would you ever consider painting the Historic Park Inn Hotel?”  My answer was an instantaneous “Yes!”

I asked Caitlin who she envisioned wearing the hotel, and she replied with Rita Hayworth or Lucille Ball, because I had yet to include a redhead in the series (her words). I agreed with Rita, as I had been considering her for the series already. As we continued our dialogue, Caitlin sent a picture of herself, and like Rita, she was also a beautiful, fiery redhead. From that moment on, it was a done deal.

Rita, a drop dead gorgeous pin-up girl, could make wearing an old barn look good... so that wasn’t an issue. However, I wanted her to look regal and statuesque. I flanked the image of Rita modeling the Historic Park Inn Hotel with two columns from the adjoining City National Bank, also designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Rita’s iridescent skin is soft and refined against the strong lines of the distinctive brick and terra-cotta columns. This series let's me play with contrast and complement by painting both architecture and the female form. Combining two of my passions into a colorful conversation.

The original copy of Wright on Rita now fittingly resides with Caitlin, the redhead that helped inspire the painting. Some things are just meant to be… with a little help from the Internet.
