About the Painting:

I have always seen a relationship between the human form and architecture. I am continually looking for ways to express that connection the way I see it. My idea for the Frankly Speaking series came to me as a good way to bring the two forms together. This series celebrates Frank Lloyd Wright’s buildings as women’s hats.

This painting blends two icons: one is known for quiet grace and elegance, and the other for his innovative and dignified style of architecture. Both concepts are show-stoppers; both light a New York skyline at night.

My fascinations with the architectural designs of Frank Lloyd Wright have been part of my psyche for a very long time. His styling’s and innovative ideas are an inspiration. I have also had an intense curiosity for all things “Old Hollywood.” This celebration of classic fashion and glamour (often with a dose of scandal) has been the ongoing fodder for my wandering imagination on a lazy Sunday afternoon. So these two influences find themselves coming together on one canvas.

I had originally pictured a different model wearing the Guggenheim as a hat, but a short trip to the grocery store and a long wait in the checkout line changed that plan. An article on Audrey Hepburn caught my eye and a light went on.

No one else could rock the Guggenheim like Audrey.

Audrey Hepburn

About Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)

Audrey Hepburn was an accomplished British actor, model, dancer, and humanitarian. She starred in timeless films such as Roman HolidaySabrina, The Nun's Story, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade, My Fair Lady, and Wait Until Dark. She remains one of only 15 people who have won Academy, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Awards. Hepburn devoted much of her later life to UNICEF, working in some of the poorest communities of Africa, South America, and Asia between 1988 and 1992.
